Why Standard Clubs Are a Compromise
Golf club manufacturers produce standard specifications designed to fit the statistical average golfer — a player of roughly average height, arm length, swing speed, and attack angle. That average golfer, if they exist at all, represents a narrow slice of the actual playing population. A six-foot-three player with a steep downswing and a moderate swing speed has very different equipment needs from a five-foot-six player with a shallow attack and high clubhead speed. Placing both of them in the same standard set and expecting equal results is optimistic at best.
The argument for off-the-rack clubs used to be economic: custom fitting was expensive, slow, and available only at specialist fitters who might be hours away from your home course. That argument has weakened substantially over the past decade. The major manufacturers — Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Ping, Cobra — all operate fitting networks that have brought certified fitting centres to most urban and suburban golf markets. Prices for a professional fitting session now range from nothing (when combined with a purchase) to a few hundred dollars or pounds for a fully independent session. Measured against the cost of the clubs themselves, the fee is minor.
What a Fitting Session Involves
A proper club fitting begins with a conversation, not a launch monitor. A skilled fitter asks about your current ball flight, where you typically miss, what distances you hit each club, what you wish your game did differently, and what your goals are — not to make polite small talk but to establish a diagnostic baseline before any data is collected.
The launch monitor session typically starts with your current driver or a range of demonstration heads. Modern systems track ball speed, carry distance, total distance, launch angle, backspin, sidespin, smash factor (a measure of energy transfer efficiency), attack angle, and clubhead path. These metrics tell the fitter things you cannot feel. A player who hits what feels like a solid 7-iron may be producing higher spin than optimal, costing them carry distance. A driver that feels consistent may be producing variable spin rates suggesting a mismatched shaft.
The fitting then moves through methodical testing: shaft weight and flex, then shaft kick point, then head loft and lie angle, then face design. An experienced fitter will narrow options efficiently rather than testing every possible combination, steering toward the specifications that consistently produce the best combination of distance, accuracy, and appropriate trajectory for the individual golfer.
Shaft Fitting: The Most Important Variable
Many club golfers upgrade their iron or driver heads while keeping whatever shaft came in the standard model. This is the most common and most consequential fitting error. The shaft is the engine of the club; the head is the body that delivers it. A premium driver head with the wrong shaft can perform materially worse than a budget head with the right shaft.
Shaft fitting involves weight, flex, kick point, and torque. Heavier shafts generally produce less dispersion and suit golfers with faster, more aggressive swings. Lighter shafts help golfers who lack clubhead speed and need help generating launch. Flex — extra stiff, stiff, regular, senior, ladies — is a label that varies between manufacturers: one brand's stiff may be another's regular, which is why CPM (cycles per minute) measurements from a frequency meter are more reliable than the printed label. Kick point governs where the shaft bends most during the swing: a low kick point promotes higher launch, a high kick point keeps the ball lower, and fitting this correctly can transform a player who consistently overshoots greens or struggles to carry hazards.
Irons: Blade, Cavity Back, and the Forgiveness Spectrum
Iron fitting adds a dimension not relevant to driver fitting: the choice between blade, muscle back, players cavity, game-improvement, and super-game-improvement designs. This is not purely a question of skill level, though it correlates with it. It is a question of what the player's miss pattern is and what they need their irons to do.
A blade iron concentrates mass directly behind the sweet spot, producing excellent feedback, workability, and precise distance control when struck well. A miss off the toe or heel is punished significantly. A game-improvement cavity back redistributes weight to the perimeter of the head, making off-centre hits behave more consistently. A player whose handicap depends more on tightening dispersion than on workability will score better from a cavity back even if their ego prefers a blade.
Lie angle is the variable most often overlooked in iron fitting. An iron that sits too upright at address will push the toe upward at impact, encouraging shots that go left (for a right-handed player). One that sits too flat pushes the heel up, encouraging shots right. Most standard sets ship at neutral lie, but many golfers — particularly taller players with upright posture — benefit from irons bent one or two degrees upright. This adjustment costs very little and can correct a persistent directional error that no swing change would fix.
Wedge and Putter Fitting
Wedge fitting is undervalued relative to its impact on scoring. A properly fitted sand wedge or lob wedge considers bounce angle — the degree to which the sole of the club interacts with turf or sand. High bounce suits aggressive swings and soft turf conditions; low bounce suits sweeper swings and firm turf. A player who digs deep with their wedge on soft turf needs high bounce to prevent the club from burying. A player with a shallow attack on firm links turf needs low bounce to prevent the club from skidding past the ball. Fitting the wrong bounce angle costs golfers all the performance they paid for in premium wedge construction.
Putter fitting has grown rapidly as a discipline. Length (standard putters at 35 inches suit most players, but many prefer 34 or even 33 inches depending on posture), head style (blade, mallet, high-MOI stability putter), and face technology (milled, insert, grooved) all affect feel and performance. A ten-minute session with a putting fitter who measures your eyes-over-ball position and natural stroke arc can be worth more than an hour of generic putting instruction.
When to Get Fitted
The best time for a first serious fitting is when you have enough swing consistency that your ball flight is repeatable — typically when a golfer has played for at least a year and reached a handicap that allows a distinguishable pattern to emerge. Fitting a complete beginner may be premature because their swing is changing too rapidly to optimise for. Fitting a 20-handicapper is genuinely worthwhile. Fitting a scratch player who has been playing cavity backs for years may confirm they should be in blades, or may surprise them.
